Periods and Heavy Bleeding

I have endometriosis which leave me awfully painful periods and very heavy bleeding. Unfortunately periods cost money and the money really does add up quickly, especially if you have heavy flow.

I have tried almost all of them, my exceptions being period underwear and the like of the moon cups as they just aren’t the sort of thing for me.

I do have a post coming up soon about my Endometriosis story so make sure to sign up for notifications 😘

Being bedridden I have had to try many different pads to try to find something that made me feel protected when I was bleeding heavily. My choice of protection is towels or sanitary pads whichever you prefer to call them, I will just call them pads.

When I was having extremely heavy days and nights I was having to put a towel under my body whilst also using 2 nighttime pads made specifically for heavy flow. Many times this just wasn’t enough so I decided to try maternity pads.

Yes maternity pads, maternity pads are designed for the days after a woman gives birth, yes they are very bulky but when you are laying down all day you do need something extra, they are also so much longer than a normal pad which is exactly what I needed.

We already know that sanitary wear is extremely expensive and I understand that people do feel very passionate that this is a cost we have to incur in the first place

As times are very tough for so many of us right now and many of us are having to look after every penny,  I thought that I would share this with you.

Abena Maternity pads = 3.40 on subscribe and save /

14pads £3.40/14 = £0.24 pence per pad

Always size 5 pads = 17.09 on subscribe and save /

27 pads £17.09/27 pads = £0.63 pence per pad

Lilets Maternity = 7.65 on subscribe and save /

36 pads £7.65/36 pads = £0.21 pence per pad

The real cost

Depending on the paper you read or the tv you watch you may have a very different cost in mind of what a woman spends on her sanitary wear. To give you a better idea have a read of the article below which states the average woman spends roughly £500 per year.

If we look at that over a lifetime of say 30 years of monthly periods, that cost then works out at £15,000 😳

https://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/period-poverty-is-real-but-the-average-woman-isnt-spending-500-a-year-on-menstruation

Here is another article looking at lifetime cost yet coming to a different conclusion  https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/09/03/women-spend-thousands-on-periods-tampon-tax_n_8082526.html

Unfortunately, that doesn’t even deep dive into the real problems that women with heavy periods face. I have had to buy new bedding, strong cleaning supplies, a new mattress, countless sets of underwear to replace underwear which has been ruined, add to that clothes, pyjamas, hot water bottles even a tens machine.
Over the years the number of parking costs, taxis or petrol to and from hospital appointments even having to take unpaid leave if I didn’t have the holidays left to take.

I do hope that this helps another woman if not to save you money to make you feel a little more confident in the pad you are wearing doing the job it is supposed to do.
