Ketamine

Ketamine automatically makes me think of horse tranquilliser but apparently, it is an anaesthetic used by Medical Practitioners & veterinarians. It makes me wonder why on earth someone would want to take this for fun but according to new research, they could be onto something.

I recently came across an article about Dr. Bryan Henry, a nurse practitioner at the time undergoing medical training. Initially, he thought his fatigue was due to the long hours he was working, but it turned out to be much more complicated. In 2006 Dr. Henry was diagnosed with Hypogonadism while also recovering from a traumatic brain injury he had suffered while in the military. Being able to find a specialist to take his symptoms of  Hypogonadism seriously in Virginia proved difficult leading him to take matters into his own hands.

Dr Henry went on to investigate Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology himself gaining his FNP license from the University of Oklahoma, followed by a PhD in endocrinology and reproductive physiology. Dr Henry went on to set up his Private Practice in 2015 while also working 80-hour weeks in the ICU.

Unfortunately, this is a story I hear all of the time from people who suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis while Dr Henry was working 2 jobs we often see women sufferers working Full-Time Jobs and then going home to manage their Home and Family. Sometimes not getting to sit down till after 10 p.m.

I am certainly seeing that more and more patients are finding Drs who are taking risks with treatment especially if a patient is suffering from multiple illnesses only this week hearing about Ketamine and Advanced Stem Cell Therapy as treatments. Unfortunately, every day I hear from ME patients who can’t get a Dr to prescribe them pain relief so I can’t see them being offered Ketamine or Stem Cell therapy.

Ketamine

Ketamine is a dissociative drug which means that it produces visual and auditory distortion by acting on the different chemicals in the brain. Ketamine as an illegal drug is being snorted, smoked or swallowed and the “High” can take effect within a minute or 30 minutes depending on how you take the drug.

Dr Henry was given Ketamine Therapy in a controlled medical setting where they monitored his session carefully. Dr Henry says that therapy was given intravenously or orally to put a patient into a dissociated state allowing the patient to experience altered perceptions and sensations for a short period.

Ketamine dissociative state seems to be a side effect in the treatment it is how Ketamine is believed to interact with certain neurotransmitter systems in the brain helping to alleviate depression and other mental health conditions that are being researched showing good clinical trials and studies.

Unfortunately with every ray of hope comes an ugly side effect and large repeated doses can lead to Ketamine Bladder Syndrome which can lead to being unable to hold urine, incontinence and ulcers in the bladder.

Could this be the future –

Dr Henry is seeing positive results from Ketamine Therapy but unfortunately, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is not the only illness or condition that Dr Henry is suffering from. As someone who suffers from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, I am going to see articles like this as positive and hope that moving forward Drs will start trying more things. We need to study alternatives when it comes to healing the mind. Stem Cell Therapy and Ketamine, CBD, Weed even micro-dosing could be the norm in 10 years but unless we start taking patients seriously we will never move forward.  I believe we have to treat the person as a whole taking into account everything we put on or in our bodies as well as our minds.
